A 911SC Joins the Family

by Cameron Taylor

We have added a new prize the Stoddard collection – a 1982 911 SC. Not long ago this generation of 911 was considered too new to be a classic, and often lost in the shadow of the long hood cars. But in the past few years interest in the SC has increased dramatically as more people are appreciating these wonderful driver’s cars. The SC was a great mix between the classic and modern 911s. We have been developing parts for the 911SC, and owning one is very helpful during our research phase of design. Stoddard’s Bruce Schwartz also fondly remembers this particular model – his first Porsche was an SC.

In terms of performance there is also an interesting balance. With a refined and powerful engine it is a performance car in the modern sense. The 3.0 liter engine previously seen in the 911 Turbo was chosen as the SC’s engine as it was more reliable and modern than the old 2.7 liter unit. As a naturally aspirated car it proved to be easier to drive than the Turbo, but with the 3.0 it had greater performance than previous 911s. The powertrain was improved throughout the SC’s production run (which ran from 1978 through 1983). Our 1982 model represents one of the best years of the SC. This SC is Grand Prix White with black Fuchs wheels (a popular option for the car that came with ATS “cookie cutter” wheels as standard) and a tan interior.

Bruce Schwartz says the SC’s status as a driver's car attracted him to it, pointing out that the SC has some of the modern refinements of later models while still having the character of the first generation of 911. “My first Porsche was an SC, so the cars have always been special to me. They have a lot of the character of the long hood cars but also are more modern and usable.” The car had also recently been repainted as part of an exterior restoration and had been very well cared for since new. One low point on the car is the interior, which is neither unique nor in particular great condition. The tan color does not seem to suit the Grand Prix White exterior paint. However, this is a superb car that Stoddard is very excited to have.

When introduced in 1978, the SC was a well-designed refinement of the G-Body 911. With crisp handling, the SC is in the spirit of the classic long hood 911. The purity of the original 911 is present in the car in a more usable package. The strong sales of 911SC led to the continuation of the 911—which Porsche had been planning to drop in favor of the 928 after 1981. Despite this enormous success,  it has only been in recent years that the 911SC has been recognized as the classic Porsche that it is.

Check back for updates as we make this 911SC our own.
