Porsche Bloodlines Run Deep

1966. Can you imagine the excitement of just purchasing a brand new Porsche 912/5 coupe with a yearning to join the Porsche Club of America?

It was in the Fall of the year…and I had just traded-in my 1960 356 B Condor Yellow coupe for a factory-ordered Slate Grey 912/5-speed coupe at Stuttgart Import Corporation’s little dealership in Towson, Maryland.

The dealer, “Pappy” Long, told me that the Chesapeake Region of PCA (which began five years earlier in 1961) met once a month at the Deutsches Haus Restaurant in mid-town Baltimore. He thought I should join PCA…as I was a young and enthusiastic owner of the Marque.

Down the Stairway of the Deutsches Haus

I learned that the old Gothic designed structure on Cathedral Street became the Deutsches Haus in the 1890s and served as a major cultural hub for Baltimore’s German American community with dozens of popular social clubs, hosting dancing events, political rallies, and beer garden activities…until WWI.

The Chesapeake Region’s monthly meetings were held downstairs in the basement. I recall it was a ‘dank’ experience walking down the old stairway of the former beer and wine cellar.

At the beginning of the meeting, I was asked to introduce myself, as I did not have a sponsor. I was the only applicant for membership attending that evening. I stood up and said, “I’m Lee Raskin of Pikesville, Maryland. I’m engaged to be married in December. I am a first-year law student at the University of Baltimore School of Law…and I own a brand new 1966 Slate Grey 912/5 coupe.”

A Chorus of “Bronx Booing”

I expected a little applause…but suddenly, there were twenty-five pair of intense eyeballs staring at me…as if I said / done something terribly wrong.

Within seconds, I heard a chorus of “Bronx Booing.”

The President of the Chesapeake Region chimed in: “Welcome Lee Raskin…and don’t pay any attention to our members – all of whom own 356s. The new 912 model hasn’t been accepted as a true Porsche, yet.”

Yet? I was miffed and replied: “OK…but I’ve owned a 356 B coupe for several years and I traded-up for the new 912…that had the same Porsche four-cylinder 1600 cc engine of the 356.”

The members responded with louder “Booing” along with some negative finger gestures.

At this point, I was no longer miffed…I was humiliated and pissed.

I responded: “You want to know something? I came here tonight…cutting my law school class…to join the Porsche Club of America…and you guys (they were a lot older…maybe in their fifties…and there no women were present) ought to be ashamed of yourself.”

“You need me…more than I need the Porsche Club of America.” Silence.

I put on my coat and walked out. In fact, I drove my Porsche back to the law school several blocks away and took a seat in my Torts class for the rest of the evening – from 8 to 10 pm.

Some Things Do Change…

1972. Several of my Porsche friends encouraged me to return – to join the PCA in February of that year…where I saw an influx of members driving a new Porsche model…the 914 mid-engine roadster.

Acceptance of the 914 model among the members was met with mild resistance…but I don’t recall anyone “Booing” those new members – from an unforgettable experience six-years earlier.

By this time…a younger and diverse membership was actively present, who had moved away from the Deutsches Haus cellar to a contemporary setting…promoting the Club’s more social, family-oriented motorsports program…which included an annual Chesapeake Challenge multi-region event featuring a Concours d’Elegance, a gimmick rallye, and a demanding autocross…modeled after PCA’s National Porsche Parade.

170,000 Members Later

2026. The Porsche Club of America represents over 170,000 owners / members with nearly 150 regional chapters across North America.

Today, PCA’s spirit of diversity and inclusion promotes not just Porsche vehicles, but all the individuals who own them.

This Fall, the Chesapeake Region will host its 57th Annual Chesapeake Challenge. Hooray for the legendary PCA Chesapeake Region and its long-standing event.

I am proud to be a 50 plus year member of PCA – who was invited to attend the Porsche Club of America’s Open House event this past September – and to be a guest storyteller (sponsored by Stoddard-NLA, LLC) to speak about the late Chesapeake Region PCA member and legendary Porsche SCCA and IMSA race driver, Bruce “King Carrera” Jennings.

My storytelling, especially to a younger generation…hopefully represents an accurate and historic component of a dynamic marque’s history – and its long-time association with the Porsche Club of America and the Porsche 356 Registry.

Vroom….Vroom.
