About the Porsche 928 S4 (1987–1991)

The Porsche 928 S4, introduced for model year 1987 and produced through 1991, represents a landmark moment in the 928’s long evolution: the adoption of an all-new 5.0-litre 32-valve dual-overhead-cam V8 producing 320 PS in European trim and a more refined 316 PS in US specification. The move to four valves per cylinder and two camshafts per bank transformed the engine’s character, delivering a broader power band, a more sporting exhaust note and a significant advance in both outright performance and throttle response. The S4 was also the first 928 to receive a comprehensively restyled body, with flush door handles, a smoothed hood, integrated front and rear bumpers, a wider rear track and an aggressive nose treatment that lowered the drag coefficient and gave the car a more purposeful stance. The Bosch LH-Jetronic system moved to the Bosch 3.3 Motronic ECU for integrated ignition and injection management, and the Getrag four-speed automatic was available alongside the five-speed manual.

The timing-belt service on the S4’s 32-valve engine is more involved than on the earlier SOHC cars, as each bank has its own belt arrangement. Stoddard carries the correct S4 front timing belt, S4 rear timing belt, timing belt tensioner pulleys (front and rear banks), timing belt idler rollers, camshaft sprocket seals (all four), crankshaft front seal and all timing cover gaskets. The Bosch Motronic 3.3 fuel and ignition system is fully supported with the LH airflow (mass-air) sensor, Motronic ECU, fuel injectors and injector seal kits, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump and filter, knock sensor, coolant temperature sensor, throttle position sensor, ignition coil, spark plugs and leads and oxygen sensor. Engine rebuild parts include the 5.0-litre piston and ring sets, connecting rod bearings, main bearing set, cylinder head gaskets (per bank), head bolt set, valve cover gaskets, valve stem seals, hydraulic cam follower sets and the complete engine gasket set.

Cooling system maintenance is critical on the S4; Stoddard stocks the radiator, main water pump, auxiliary electric water pump, thermostat and housing, upper and lower coolant hoses, coolant expansion tank and cap and all heater core hoses. The four-speed automatic is supported with the transmission filter and pan gasket kit, torque converter seals, torque tube center support bearing, flex disc sets front and rear and driveshaft rubber boots; for five-speed manual cars we stock the Getrag synchro ring sets, shift fork springs, input and output shaft seals, clutch disc, pressure plate and throwout bearing. Brakes are large four-wheel ventilated discs: we supply the ATE front caliper rebuild kits, rear caliper rebuild kits, front and rear vented rotors, brake pads, tandem master cylinder, brake booster, flexible brake hoses and steel brake lines. Suspension parts include front upper and lower control arm bushings, front coil springs, front shock absorbers, front wheel bearing kits, power steering rack seals and bellows, rear Weissach trailing arm bushings, rear wheel bearing kits, rear shock absorbers and front and rear sway bar bushings and end links. Body parts for the restyled S4 body — including front bumper cover, rear bumper cover, flush door handles, rear hatch glass and seal, windshield and seal and door seals — are all in stock.
