Launched in 1998, the Porsche 996 was a clean-sheet 911 with a water-cooled, four-valve flat-six, shared much of its front end with the Boxster and grew from 3.4 to 3.6 litres in 2002, when its headlights were restyled. The 996 GT3 and 996 Turbo used the Mezger engine derived from the racing 911s.
