Porsche Boxster 986 parts from 1997 to 2004

About the Porsche Boxster 986 (1997–2004)

The Porsche Boxster 986, produced from 1997 through 2004, was the model that rescued Porsche at its most financially precarious moment and simultaneously delivered the most pure mid-engined sports-car experience the company had offered since the 914/6. By mounting the water-cooled flat-six directly amidships and routing the driveshaft to a rear-mounted transaxle, Porsche achieved a polar moment of inertia and a 50/50 weight distribution that made the 986 one of the most balanced and driver-focused open sports cars at any price. The power soft-top, with its glass rear window and fast electric operation, made it as practical as it was pleasurable. Three engine variants spanned the production run: the original 2.5-litre M96/20 producing 204 PS, revised to 2.7 litres (M96/22) with 220 PS for 2000, and the performance Boxster S (M96/21, 3.2 litres, 252 PS), the latter sharing its basic architecture with the contemporary 996 Carrera. The 986 shared its front-end body structure, dashboard and front suspension with the 996, creating manufacturing synergies that made both cars possible; the shared architecture also means that many front-end parts are interchangeable, which is useful knowledge when sourcing components.

The most widely discussed maintenance item on the 986 is the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing on certain M96 engines, which can fail without warning and cause catastrophic engine damage. Stoddard stocks the correct IMS bearing upgrade kit for the 986, the associated IMS seal and the rear main seal (RMS) that is best replaced at the same time, as both require similar access through the bellhousing. Engine rebuild parts include the M96 piston and cylinder sets, connecting rod bearings, main bearing set, camshaft sprocket bolts, timing chain kit (chain, tensioners and guides), VarioCam actuators and solenoids, cylinder head gaskets, head bolt sets, valve cover gaskets, camshaft oil seals and the complete engine gasket set. Cooling-system parts are critical: we carry the radiators (left and right), water pump, thermostat, coolant expansion tank and cap, upper and lower coolant hoses, heater core hoses and coolant temperature sensors. The Bosch Motronic fuel system is supported with the fuel injectors and O-ring seals, fuel pressure regulator, high-pressure fuel pump, fuel filter, mass-airflow sensor, throttle body, oxygen sensors and DME ECU.

The five-speed manual gearbox and five-speed Tiptronic are both supported: we supply the manual synchro ring sets, shift fork springs, input and output shaft seals, transaxle gasket set, clutch disc, pressure plate, dual-mass flywheel and throwout bearing; for Tiptronic cars the transmission filter and pan gasket kit and shift solenoids. Brakes: front Brembo caliper rebuild kits, rear caliper rebuild kits, front vented rotors, rear solid rotors, brake pads, tandem master cylinder, brake booster and flexible brake hoses. Front MacPherson strut suspension: strut inserts, front coil spring sets, lower control arm bushings, tie-rod ends, steering rack boots and front wheel bearing kits. Rear multi-link suspension: rear control arm bushings, rear wheel bearing kits, rear shock absorbers and sway bar links and bushings. The convertible top mechanism is a known item; we carry top hydraulic pump and cylinder, top latch assemblies, convertible top fabric, top frame seals and weatherstrips and rear window glass. Body parts include the front bumper cover, rear bumper cover, windshield and seal, door seals and all body weatherstrips. Select your year above to open the Boxster 986 catalog.
