This solves two problems with the original trunk hinges. First, the pivot bolts seize. The pivot uses a spherical bearing capable of supporting a much greater load without binding and that won't rust. Second, the original design uses thin sheet metal that tears, leaving the metal around the hinges rusted and deformed. The plates clamp the sheet metal at the hinge attachment point to reinforce the area, conceal existing damage, and prevent future damage.
