'What Da Fuchs'

Just ask Otto Fuchs KG of Meinerzhagen, Germany, a family-owned manufacturer of non-ferrous metal products...

1964. Porsche KG of Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen contracted with Otto Fuchs KG to develop a lightweight, high performance one-piece aluminum wheel for their proposed TYP 911S production sports car. Porsche AG specifically wanted to move beyond their traditional steel wheels and sought to have a new, attractive light alloy high performance wheel.

Ferdinand Alexander "Butzi" Porsche, who designed the TYP 911 model, was responsible for the co-development of the revolutionary aluminum 'cloverleaf' Fuchs wheels along with renowned Porsche AG modeler Heinrich Klie, and head engineer, Fritz Fuchs.

Porsche realized the new one-piece aluminum wheel would be recognized for their lightness, strength, stability, and improved road handling. Fuchsfeige AG became the exclusive manufacturer for Porsche AG with an initial order of 5,000 Fuchs 'cloverleaf' pattern wheels.

1965. Porsche unveiled the new TYP 911 with a new 2.0-liter six-cylinder engine that was equipped with standard steel wheels along with small, chromed hubcaps. Two years later, lightweight alloy Fuchs 15x4.5-inch wheels became standard and the 911S became noticeably sleeker. The first Fuchfelge were mounted on a 911S Targa that was displayed at the 1965 IAA Auto Show.

Porschephiles quickly discovered the 5-spoke 'cloverleaf' pattern Fuchfelge were not just stylish, they were also a remarkable engineered improvement. The one-piece Fuchs offered exceptional strength that was fundamental for ultimate driving performance. The new Fuchs were 5kg each, about 3kg lighter than the earlier standard steel wheel.

Fuchs wheels grew from 15x4.5 inches to 15x5.5 inches in 1968 to 15x6 inches for 1969. Called the '6R', this 6-inch wide 'deep dish' variant was originally produced for the front of the rare 1967 911R racing cars. Two versions were made as a 911S option that were distinguishable by being either with or without hearts. The '6R' was also manufactured in a 7-inch variant and called the "7R." The early "7R" was available for the street driven 911S.

1970s. Fuchs wheel became the most popular option with the purchase of other Porsche 911 models.

The original design of Fuchs wheels was preserved with the arrival of the 911 Turbo, as the wheels were widened to accommodate the body's new design for enhanced performance.

The 911 Carrera RS with Fuchs became a true symbol of wheel superiority on the road and the track. The Carrera RS came equipped with the 15x8 inch Fuchs. This variant was only produced for six months, and historically remains as a very rare and expensive 'correct' wheel to obtain.

The most desirable era wheel for modern restorations of the earlier 911s are the 15x9 inch and 15x11 inch Fuchs variants from the 1973/1974 911 RSR race cars. These wheel size changes improved stability and grip while retaining the aesthetics that had made Fuchs famous.

1980s. For more than 20 years Fuchs existed in the standard and optional equipment. At first Fuchs wheels were offered with a polished rim spider at the foreground and black painted at the background. Later the cloverleaf was totally black painted. Officially until 1989 Fuchs were offered for Porsche cars and as the standard wheel for the 911 Carrera.

Fuchs wheels were also adapted to other models of the marque, such as the 914 and the 924, proving their versatility and appeal. Each new model captured the spirit of its time while remaining true to Porsche's legacy.

1990s. Porsche wisely decided to reintroduce Fuchs wheels on selected 911 models. This nostalgic return to the past was enthusiastically received by all Porschephiles, who saw it as a tribute to the marque's past. Fuchs wheels were reproduced with new technologies while preserving the iconic old school design.

Models such as the TYP 964 and 993 benefited from this decision, where Fuchs wheels were again being offered to attract a new generation of enthusiastic Porsche owners.

2026. Fuchs live on and continue to be a symbol for the Marque. Today, each Fuchs wheel is constructed using an alloy base of 97% aluminum with 3% of wrought alloy for additional strength. Their timeless design and proven performance make them a sought-after choice among enthusiasts for their ability to enhance the aesthetics of a 911, whether stock or modified.

You can purchase Fuchs in 15-, 16-, 17-, 18-, and 19-inch sizes for classic through contemporary Porsche models.

Interestingly, Fuchs have been featured in social media advertising and videos reinforcing their presence as a visual cultural icon. Generations of Porsche devotees often recall their first encounter with a TYP 911 equipped with Fuchs wheels, as a moment in time—etched in their memory.

Yes, the evolution of Fuchsfelge is a fascinating story involving the significant long-term partnership with the Porsche Marque…one that is being shared with the passion of thousands of worldwide Porschephiles.

So, now you know the real story of…'WHAT DA FUCHS'
