Jacqueline Evans de Lopez…“Queen Carrera”

Recently, I wrote about Bruce Jennings --who was the legendary Three-Time SCCA National C-Production Porsche 356 A Four Cam Speedster driver who was known as, “King Carrera.”

IN 1950, Jacqueline Evans de Lopez was the first woman to enter and drive in the Carrera Panamericana Mexican Road Races from 1950-1954--and to be called, “Queen Carrera.”

Evans de Lopez, who was British, drove in the 1950 Carrera race with a 1947 Chrysler Windsor 5.4 liter V-8. She finished the entire race in the 45th position. Pretty impressive.

In 1951. Jacqueline entered the Carrera II race with a Chrysler Saratoga 5.4 liter V-8; but did not finish (DNF).

In 1952. Jacqueline competed in the Carrera III with a Chrysler Saratoga 5.4 liter V-8, and finished respectfully as, 37th overall.

In 1953. Jacqueline competed in the Carrera IV with a Porsche 356 coupe, but she was disqualified for being over the time limit on a driving leg. Her Porsche 356 was artistically painted with the portrait of Eva Peron on the front hood in full tribute. She sponsored the Eva Peron Porsche in Eva’s memory.

In 1954. Jacqueline entered her fourth and final Carrera Mexican Road Race with a Porsche 356 SL Gmund coupe, #356/02-054. However, the legendary Porsche was a DNF during this grueling 3,070 kilometer. race.

With the tragic events at Le Mans in France, and at the Mille Miglia in Italy, the Carrera IV would become the final race in Mexico…as well as for Jacqueline Evans de Lopez…as she returned to her acting career.

Jacqueline Evans de Lopez would become one of the most prominent cultural women in Mexico during the mid-20th century. She is best remembered for her trailblazing participation in motorsport and her prolific career in Mexican cinema.

Jacqueline Evans was mostly known by her married name, de Lopez. She was married to the legendary and beloved Mexican bull fighter, Fernando Lopez.

Jacqueline starred in over 30 feature films in Mexico. After retiring from acting, Jacqueline opened a very successful bookstore in Mexico City, La Torre de Papel.

Jacqueline Evans de Lopez passed away in 1989, at age 75.

May her memory always be a blessing.
